Swedish scientists from Lund University discovered how middle -aged time they reacted to people with disabilities. This discovery was conducted on the basis of an analysis of a skeleton of a seriously injured man of the knee living in Lunda between the fourteenth and XVI centuries. The study was published in the Open Archaeological Science Magazine (OPAR).
The skeleton, individually appointed 2399, belongs to a 30 -year -old man. At the age of 20, he had a hard knee broken, could be from a horse or a heavy object. Injury makes it dependent on crutches or support until the end of life.
The analysis shows a significant medical care man, including anesthesia with lavender oil, opium or alcohol, regular treatment of wounds and treatment of osteomyelitis (bone inflammation) and, maybe, surgical procedures to remove pus.
Although the common discrimination in that era (disability may be related to the punishment of the Lord or even criminals), this man has occupied a relatively high position. He was buried at the base of the Church Tower – a reputable place, often for wildlife or wealthy citizens.
Social status can compensate for its physical limitations. This is a rare case when archeology allows you to see the real life behind the documents of the law and religious prescription, Mr. Blair Nolan, the research leader said.
The opening has proved a development system for serious care at the end of the Middle Ages, the use of complex health practices, including possible activities, as well as a vague attitude, but not completely negative for people with disabilities.
