Researchers from the University of Michigan have discovered a new type of silicone, can conduct electricity, although silicon is often considered an insulating substance. This discovery can lead to the appearance of a new flexible screen, solar panels and smart clothes.
Conventional silicon includes chains of silicon and oxygen atoms with organic groups, and usually it does not miss the current. But in the new material, the structure of the string is slightly different – this is a mixture of two types of silicon, so the electrons can move freely.
Interestingly, the length of these chains affects the color of silicone: the long string emits red light and short chain – blue.
Previously, the pure silicon silicon was transparent or white, now it can be brightened and colorful, scientists wrote.
