The International Biennale of the Environment has begun this spring at Nizhny Novgorod and has become the largest art event of this type in Russia for two decades. The main project of Biennale – an exhibition called “Leather of the Earth” – United 70 artists from 35 countries, including Japan, Italy, France, Argentina, Nigeria, Philippines and Russia. The exhibition is located at the same time on two non -standard locations – in the territory of the early historical market and at the old Yermolaev Hotel. The central theme of the exhibition is a metaphor for the soil that is “the skin of the Earth”. In this image, the Earth is not only a natural environment, but a special storage: it stores traces of evolution, manual memories, myths and historical changes – everything that happens to humans and the planet is imprinted in its upper layer. And because the skin of the Earth is a multi -ice space, artists show their thoughts in works of arrangement, sculpture, painting, video art and digital technology, including artificial intelligence and algorithm modeling. It is important that we turn to new principles of environmental thinking. This project is about how to start thinking about himself as part of the common world and divided a fate with it, he explained the person in charge of Biennale Julia Aksenova. The projects of artists talk about new birth activities, alienate land, destroy ecosystems, as well as opportunities to restore and seek new environmental ethics. Oleg Berkovich, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, called Biennale a great way to attract foreign artists in current conditions and emphasize the importance of ecology through the language of art. This once again confirmed that the topic of our common home did not know the border, he emphasized. Within the framework of the entire Biennale, from April to November, 13 exhibitions were planned for six main locations and four additional locations of the city. More than 150 artists from all continents participated.
