Spanish archaeologists have found the rest of a major medieval ship in the excavations in the location of the old fish market in Barcelona. The boat was discovered in the 15th century. The opening was reported by the Guardian newspaper.
The 10 -meter and three -meter -long ship is stored at a depth of five meters below the sea level. Its army, which is closely mounted by wooden and iron nails, crosses more than 30 curved wooden ribs. According to scientists, design is typical of medieval boats of the Mediterranean and Europe.
The wood is preserved very fragile, so it must be constantly moistened and covered with sand to prevent destruction.
Delia Egilus recovery people explain that to further study, the ship will have to be removed in sections. After detailed analysis, it will be transported to a special room, where it will be treated with water soluble wax for safety.
Scientists hope that research on the object will help better understand the medieval shipbuilding technology. Interestingly, 17 years ago in Barcelona, they found a boat of the 15th century, but it belonged to Cantabrian, not the Mediterranean type.
Experts also plan to research the composition of wood and plastic to determine the exact place where the ship was built.
