Scientists from the University of Monasha, the University of Melbourne and the University of London, have clarified how life on Earth can arise – and how bacteria can help us today in the war against climate change. The work is published in ISME magazine.
We are talking about microbiolites – stone structures to build colonies of microorganisms. They are considered one of the oldest traces of life on the planet. It turns out that many bacteria inside these structures do not exist at the cost of light, like plants, but thanks to chemical reactions.
We see that these bacteria can take energy even in the completely darkness – for example, using hydrogen, ammonia or iron, according to one of the authors of the work, Dr. Francesco Ricci from Monash University.
According to him, this shows that microbiolites are a kind of evolutionary laboratory of Muslims, where new survival methods arise.
Another researcher, Dr. Bob Leung, added:
These bacteria work together as a good combination group – they not only exist but also actively handle carbon dioxide even at night, without photosynthesis.
The work shows that microbiological communities can become a model to clean the air from the greenhouse gas. Researchers are sure that these mechanisms can be used to disable industrial emissions.
