The more we often encounter the same information, the better we miss it – it has been known for a long time. But this model has an unexpected side effect: We started to believe that we saw or heard this information for the first time. This conclusion was given by scientists from the United States. The work is published in the Journal of Psychology Science.
The researchers conducted six experiments with the participation of more than 100 adults and found that when repeating the presentation of an image or reality, people systematically believed that they first encountered this before. The illusion of this time is called the Viking time repetition effect) and distorted memories up to 25%.
We are familiar with the feeling when we see the same title many times. We think: Does it not deform the repetition of our time awareness?
Scientists believe that the illusion may arise because the meetings are repeated with the object, enhance the memory of the first meeting, making it more lively and stable. This can create a sense of false in the brain that the event has occurred for a long time. Another hypothesis – our brain does not hold the event directly, but restores it according to indirect signs, including repeated frequency.
People should remember two things. -Firstly, our perception of time is an illusion. And second, even simple reasons, such as repeating information, can deform a lot of our internal time scale. “
In the future, scientists plan to check how this effect shows in memories of emotional events, in different age groups, as well as in people with memory disorders.
