A group of international scientists led by Professor Piter of Conday from the British Antarctic Service (BAS) has questioned the sensational statements about the sharp “landscape” of the Antarctic continent. The study was published in the Journal of Global Science Science (GCB).
The authors of the work indicated that allegations of an increase of 14 times in the vegetation contradict the decades of field observations. Unlike the Arctic, where climate change really stimulates the growth of plants, the plants in Antarctica are mainly represented by lichen, moss and algae, extremely slow development – only one millimeter each year.
These creatures change color depending on moisture, can deceive the explanation of the satellite image, the researchers explain.
The team introduced the air photos and photography, showing the absence of significant development in areas where satellites recorded the landscape online. In their opinion, observed changes may be related to temporary phenomena, such as seaweed clusters, snow -melting characteristics and seasonal changes in humidity.
Scientists warn that non -technical confidence on satellite data without checking the scene can lead to wrong conclusions. They called on the scientific community to give up simple interpretations to benefit more accurately, taking into account the biological reality of the Antarctic ecosystem.
